In recent feedback some of my students said they liked the history aspect of Spanish Obsession Stories and looking at history through new eyes. Looking at areas of global history and the knowledge and experience of other humans in different locations is a very exciting part of becoming multilingual.

While Spanish and Latin american history isn't given much space in many countries' curriculum, we can remain curious and dive into the sea of information available in the libraries and online. History was one of my favourite subjects at university so it is my pleasure to link the Spanish teaching aspect with a few stories based on real events from the real Spanish speaking world for you. 

Today's story is the story of the liberation of Simón Bolívar, that continues to resonate in the hearts of those who yearn for freedom and self-determination across Latin America to this day.

LA LIBERACIÓN DE SIMÓN BOLÍVAR

The Liberation of Simón Bolívar

Hace mucho tiempo, en la tierra de Venezuela, vivía un hombre valiente y visionario llamado Simón Bolívar. Nacido como Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar Palacios Ponte y Blanco, el 24 de julio de 1783, fue un líder militar y político venezolano que guió a los actuales países de Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Perú, Panamá y Bolivia hacia la independencia del Imperio Español. Conocido coloquialmente como El Libertador, o el Libertador de América.

Long ago, in the land of Venezuela, lived a brave and visionary man named Simón Bolívar. Born as Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar Palacios Ponte y Blanco on July 24, 1783, he was a Venezuelan military and political leader who guided the present-day countries of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and Bolivia to independence from the Spanish Empire. Known colloquially as El Libertador, or the Liberator of America.

Simón Bolívar nació en Caracas, en la Capitanía General de Venezuela, en el seno de una familia acomodada de españoles nacidos en América (criollos). Sin embargo, perdió a ambos padres siendo aún niño. Bolívar fue educado en el extranjero y residió en España, como era común para los hombres de familias de clase alta en su época.

Simón Bolívar was born in Caracas, in the Captaincy General of Venezuela, into a well-to-do family of American-born Spaniards (criollos). However, he lost both parents at a young age. Bolívar received his education abroad and resided in Spain, as was common for men from upper-class families in his time.

Durante su estancia en Madrid de 1800 a 1802, entró en contacto con la filosofía de la Ilustración y contrajo matrimonio con María Teresa Rodríguez del Toro y Alaysa, quien falleció en Venezuela a causa de la fiebre amarilla en 1803. De 1803 a 1805, Bolívar emprendió un Gran Tour que culminó en Roma, donde juró poner fin al dominio español en América. En 1807, regresó a Venezuela y promovió la independencia venezolana entre otros criollos acomodados.

During his stay in Madrid from 1800 to 1802, he became acquainted with Enlightenment philosophy and married María Teresa Rodríguez del Toro y Alaysa, who died in Venezuela from yellow fever in 1803. From 1803 to 1805, Bolívar embarked on a Grand Tour that concluded in Rome, where he pledged to end Spanish rule in the Americas. In 1807, Bolívar returned to Venezuela and promoted Venezuelan independence among other affluent creoles.

La historia de Bolívar es tan apasionante como su búsqueda de la libertad. Mientras la autoridad española en América debilitaba debido a la Guerra Peninsular de Napoleón, Bolívar se convirtió en un combatiente y político ferviente en las guerras de independencia hispanoamericanas.

The story of Bolívar is as captivating as his quest for freedom. While Spanish authority in America weakened due to Napoleon's Peninsular War, Bolívar became a zealous combatant and politician in the Spanish American wars of independence.

Los desafíos eran numerosos, y las adversidades parecían insuperables. Sin embargo, Bolívar, educado en las corrientes ilustradas, nunca flaqueó. En la Batalla de Carabobo, demostró su genialidad militar, obteniendo una victoria crucial que allanó el camino para la liberación de Colombia, Venezuela y Ecuador.

The challenges were numerous, and the adversities seemed insurmountable. However, Bolívar, educated in Enlightenment ideals, never faltered. In the Battle of Carabobo, he showcased his military brilliance, securing a crucial victory that paved the way for the liberation of Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador.

Bolívar no solo luchó por la independencia, sino que también abogó por la unión de los pueblos liberados. Su visión se materializó con la creación de la Gran Colombia, uniendo a Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador y Panamá.

Bolívar not only fought for independence but also advocated for the unity of the liberated nations. His vision materialized with the creation of Gran Colombia, uniting Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama.

La lucha continuó, y Bolívar, influido por sus experiencias en Europa y su dedicación a los ideales de la Ilustración, atravesó la Cordillera de los Andes para liberar Perú. Su enfrentamiento en la Batalla de Ayacucho fue determinante, consolidando la independencia de Perú y llevando a la disolución del dominio español en Sudamérica.

The struggle continued, and Bolívar, influenced by his experiences in Europe and his dedication to Enlightenment ideals, crossed the Andes to liberate Peru. His engagement in the Battle of Ayacucho was decisive, consolidating the independence of Peru and leading to the dissolution of Spanish rule in South America.

A pesar de los logros, los desafíos políticos y sociales persistieron en la Gran Colombia, conduciéndola a su eventual disolución. Bolívar, consciente de la complejidad política, renunció a la presidencia y se retiró de la vida política.

Despite the achievements, political and social challenges persisted in Gran Colombia, eventually leading to its dissolution. Bolívar, cognizant of the political complexity, resigned from the presidency and withdrew from political life.

Simón Bolívar, el héroe de la libertad, dejó un impacto duradero. Su liderazgo y determinación inspiraron a las generaciones futuras a luchar por la libertad y la justicia en todo el continente. La historia de la liberación de Simón Bolívar sigue resonando en los corazones de aquellos que anhelan la libertad y la autodeterminación en toda América Latina.

Simón Bolívar, the hero of freedom, left a lasting impact. His leadership and determination inspired future generations to fight for freedom and justice throughout the continent. The story of the liberation of Simón Bolívar continues to resonate in the hearts of those who yearn for freedom and self-determination across Latin America.
